Every concentrate is just resin, separated from the plant. Here is how each one is made, and how strong it tests.
Dry sift is loose resin heads knocked off dry flower. Kief is the same thing from a grinder.
Dry flower is shaken or tumbled over fine screens. A 3 chamber grinder catches it too.
Solventless. No chemicals involved. Typical strength: 30 to 60 percent THC.
Pressed hash is sifted resin that is heated and pressed into blocks.
Flowers are sifted until only resin remains. The resin is warmed and pressed tight.
Solventless. Typical strength: 20 to 50 percent THC.
Bubble hash is ice water hash. Cold water and ice make the resin heads fall off.
Flower goes in ice water and gets agitated. Micron bags catch the resin by size.
It dries in the dark for about a week. Solventless. Typical strength: 40 to 70 percent THC.
Rosin is oil squeezed out of flower or hash with heat and pressure.
That is the whole method. Low heat plus pressure, no chemicals, no explosions.
Solventless. Flower rosin tests 50 to 75 percent THC. Hash rosin tests 60 to 80 percent.
Live rosin is rosin made from fresh frozen flower. The plant is frozen within 30 minutes of harvest.
The frozen flower is washed in ice and RO water, run through micron screens, then freeze dried.
The dried hash is pressed with heat and pressure. Solventless. Typical strength: 65 to 85 percent THC.
BHO is butane hash oil. Butane boils at minus 1 C, so it evaporates off cleanly.
Butane is sprayed through dried flower and pulls out the oil. The oil is purged with heat and vacuum.
Left flat it sets into shatter. Whipped, it turns into wax or budder. Shatter is purged in a vacuum oven for a minimum of 48 hours.
Solvent based: butane. Typical strength: 60 to 90 percent THC. NIDA lab data averages 54 to 69 percent, with samples reported over 80 percent.
Live resin is made like BHO, but from fresh frozen buds instead of dried flower.
Butane and propane blends, chilled to at least minus 13 F, run through the frozen biomass.
The extract is purged at 70 to 85 F under vacuum. Solvent based: butane and propane. Typical strength: 65 to 90 percent THC.
Distillate is cannabis oil refined down to near pure cannabinoids.
The process is extraction, then winterization to remove fats, then decarboxylation, then short path distillation under vacuum.
Solvent based: ethanol, CO2, or butane used during extraction. Typical strength: 90 to 99 percent cannabinoids.
THCA crystals are near pure THCA, often mixed into a terpene rich sauce.
CBD isolate is a 99 percent plus pure crystalline powder made from hemp. It has no detectable THC.
Both are made through solvent based processes: extraction, winterization, distillation, and crystallization.
RSO is Rick Simpson Oil. It is a thick dark oil made with alcohol.
Cannabis soaks in 99 percent isopropyl alcohol or food grade ethanol for 3 to 5 minutes. The liquid is strained off.
The solvent is cooked off in a rice cooker at 210 to 230 F until only the thick oil remains. It is collected into a syringe.
Solvent based: isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Never use an open flame. Ethanol can ignite at 62 F.
No published source we found gives a typical THC percent for RSO. We will not guess one.
One last thing. A higher percent does not always mean a stronger experience. The plant is more than one number.
