What is happening in the weed world right now, in plain words. We check and update this page by hand.

The new federal hemp ban

New federal rules are about to change what counts as hemp. On November 12, cannabinoids made in a lab, like delta 8 and HHC, lose their hemp status. On December 11, the rest lands. From then on, THCA counts toward total THC, and finished hemp products are capped at 0.4 milligrams of THC per container. Most THCA flower and hemp drinks and gummies on shelves today will not pass the new test. State licensed dispensaries are not part of this ban. Their programs run under state law, not the hemp rules.

Rescheduling: where it stands

In April, the federal government moved state licensed medical marijuana to Schedule III. That part is done. The bigger case, moving all marijuana to Schedule III, is paused. A federal judge put the hearings on hold in late September while a government report gets reviewed. Lawyers say it could run into 2027. For everyday buyers, nothing changed. State rules still run the shops.

Two states vote on weed November 3

Election Day brings two weed votes, and both are about rolling back. Massachusetts votes on Question 8, which would end legal adult use shops and home growing. Medical would stay. If it passes, Massachusetts would be the first state to repeal legal sales. Idaho votes on giving only its legislature the power to legalize, which would close the door on voters doing it themselves.
